Insert Processing

Insert processing is rubber-to-metal bonding in which the insert is bonded during the molding process. We produce almost all inserts in-house through machining or stamping. We process and inspect each insert to ensure it is free of defects or contamination before applying adhesive and adding it to the mold.

We physically place inserts into each cavity of the mold. Molds used for top inserts have magnets that hold the insert in place. Other molds used for encapsulated production use chaplet pins to suspend the insert in the mold and allow the rubber to flow around it.

Once molding starts, the adhesive on the inserts activates to bond to the rubber.
Insert processing is applied for any part that requires flexibility and stability. Parts using insert processing can range from very small motor mounts to larger applications.

Before substrates are overmolded with rubber, paint or adhesive application is often required. JDS Technologies, Inc. is well equipped to provide customer-specific, high-quality processing to these compounds for various insert geometries and sizes. For rigorous applications, JDS Technologies, Inc. can also test rubber-to-substrate bond strength in accordance with ASTM D429.
